ENTANGLED Studio In-house 3D Concept Pipeline

Cases Inhouse
LIn this case study, we take you behind the scenes of how Entangled creates environment concept art, using one of our in-house projects as an example. We’ll walk you through the process of developing a sci-fi inspired Arctic base — from research and ideation to the final polished concept.

1. Task Definition
The goal was to create a sci-fi environment concept that could serve as a level or part of one. Inspiration came from video blogs about scientific expeditions on northern glaciers, with a focus on integrating the building into its surrounding landscape.

2. Reference Gathering
We collected references of real Arctic and Antarctic research bases, architectural elements, and materials that matched the project’s modern and scientific tone.

3. Early Ideas
Several architectural variations were explored, emphasizing minimalistic, utilitarian forms integrated into the environment. The sketches reflected a functional outpost operating in glacial terrain.

4. Defining Purpose and Function
Research on real-world Arctic stations helped anchor the design in narrative logic. We eventually settled on a glacial conservation facility — a scientific base protecting melting zones — which guided all subsequent iterations.

5. Style Exploration
Alternative design directions were tested, from utilitarian to sleek silhouettes, including Star Wars–inspired concepts. This phase helped define the project’s visual tone.

6. Shape Language and Architectural Direction
The facility evolved into angular, faceted forms. We considered heat management, modular clusters, protective antennae, and high-altitude command zones, refining the architectural direction.

7. Transition to 3D Blockout
We moved the concept into 3D to block out the structure and position it in space. This stage ensured that the design worked from multiple angles, under different lighting, and within potential gameplay contexts.

8. Refining Concept in 3D
Key functional elements were integrated, final shapes locked, materials defined, and the concept prepared for high-resolution modeling and look development.

9. Polishing
The 3D layout was refined and enhanced in 2D with hand-drawn details. Textured brushstrokes were applied to icebergs and the environment to add depth and realism.

10. Final Concept
This polished concept demonstrates our approach to visual development. It’s ready to be used as an illustration or further developed into full 3D models and game-ready level art.

We’re always looking for new opportunities to collaborate — let’s connect!
